About

Liberty Hall was built in 1881 in Lamoni, Iowa, and until 1905 was home to Joseph Smith III, the first president of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints – now the Community of Christ. Smith served in this capacity from 1860 to 1914. He called his home Liberty Hall to welcome all who might come to visit him and his family.

Liberty Hall was a center of social and religious life for the community. There were parties and weddings and fun nights before the fire place eating apples and popcorn, playing games and reading aloud. Joseph Smith said “Liberty Hall throbbed with life, teeming with the bustling activities of a large and growing family.” Birth, death, and marriage occurred within its walls. Joys and sorrows succeeded each other as day the night.

Liberty Hall is a premier restoration site listed on the Iowa and National Registers of historic homes that gives visitors a glimpse into a middle-class family, an era of late Midwestern Victorian culture, and the story of a significant religious movement in American history. The house, furniture, and antiques uniquely represent that time.

Mission Statement

“To preserve the home of Joseph Smith III and to share his life story and work in the context of his family, the Lamoni community, and the Community of Christ.”

About this trail:

The trail conveniently takes origin from the Iowa Gateway Welcome Center at Exit 4 of Interstate 35 and courses over an earthen dam to enter an abandoned railbed with its scenic canopy of oak and hickory. It passes over a rebuilt trestle to enter Lamoni and has a contiguous 1-mile loop around and through Graceland University.  The trail courses past downtown Lamoni, City Hall, the Community Center, the Lamoni Schools, and the Public Library before passing over a second rebuilt trestle to reach rural meadows. It passes over six earthen dams skirting Lamoni’s recreational Home Pond to end at Liberty Hall on the National Register of Historic Places.

The trail was paved in three segments over a 10-year span by Lamoni resident volunteers, including a number of Graceland faculty (probably the highest percentage of PhD’s on a cement crew in history). The hundreds of trail users have reported spotting deer, fox, muskrat, coyotes, raccoons, innumerable bird species, and even a bobcat in the wooded and aquatic portions of the trail. Cross-country skiers enjoy the trail in the winter months.

Parking:

Park at the Iowa Gateway Welcome Center (Exit 4 on I-35), at Central Park (behind the library off Main St./US 69) or at Liberty Hall (1138 W Main St.). Parking is available on the campus of Graceland University but restrictions may apply.

Trail User Review:

Great break on an I-35 road trip

“Definitely hit this trail as a break from a long road trip on I-35. The flat, paved trail starts east of Lamoni, goes past Graceland College, through downtown, and then enters its most picturesque stretch west of town. Here it meanders through a working field, past a nice small lake and terminates at the historic Liberty Hall. The trail is in excellent condition. There is a nice coffee shop a few blocks off the trail in the center of town.”
